If you're making a $199 retail jacket, Polartec may price you out of your margin. But if you're making a $400+ jacket or a military contract with specific performance requirements, the certification and consistency are worth the cost.
There are cheaper fleeces. There are cheaper synthetic insulations. But there's no cheaper way to get the exact same combination of warmth-to-weight, durability, and brand recognition that Polartec brings. That's the whole point of specialty supply.
If a vendor tells you “we can do everything — fleece, down, Primaloft, Polartec — all the same quality,” I'd ask them to show you their Polartec license specifically. I've seen too many “we can match it” claims that don't survive lab testing.
