Is Polartec Waterproof? A Buyer's Guide to Polartec Material, Light Fleece, and Towels

If you're Googling “is polartec waterproof” or “terry cloth towel vs microfiber,” I get it. I do the same thing before I buy anything. But after managing purchasing for a 120-person company since 2020, I've stopped looking for one “best” material. There isn't one. There's only the best material for a specific use.

I'm not a textile engineer, so I can't speak to fiber chemistry or membrane construction. What I can tell you is what I've learned from ordering uniforms, jackets, and towels—and getting it wrong a few times. If you're an office manager, a team lead, or just trying to buy responsibly, this should help.

Three Scenarios, Three Answers

Before you compare Polartec material to anything else, figure out what the item is actually for. I separate most requests into three buckets:

  • Scenario 1: Technical outerwear for outdoor or field use. Cold, wind, rain, maybe some sweat.
  • Scenario 2: Company apparel or promotional gear. Logo on the chest, mostly worn in an office or casual setting.
  • Scenario 3: Towels for a gym, kitchen, or cleaning crew. Likely to be washed by many people who don't read care labels.

These three situations lead to very different decisions.

Scenario 1: You Need Real Technical Performance

If someone asks me “is polartec waterproof?” the honest answer is: not by default. Polartec is a brand, not a single fabric. Most of their fleeces—like the classic 200-weight and Thermal Pro—are meant to insulate and breathe, not to keep rain out. They dry quickly and feel great as a midlayer, but in a downpour, they will soak through.

Some Polartec products are weatherproof. Polartec NeoShell is a waterproof-breathable membrane used in shell jackets. Certain Power Shield fabrics are water-resistant, though not fully waterproof. The key is to check the garment spec, not assume the brand name guarantees anything.

For a light fleece, there's no single winner either. If you want a midlayer that packs small and doesn't overheat, Polartec Alpha or a 100-weight fleece is a good option. If I remember correctly, Alpha was originally developed for military layering systems, so it works well for high-output activities. But it's not as abrasion-resistant as a denser fleece. If your staff will be brushing against rocks, fences, or vehicle tailgates all day, I'd take a classic 200-weight instead.

I've bought both. The 200-weight fleeces we ordered for field staff in 2022 are still going strong. The cheap non-brand fleece I bought as a spare backup pilled after two washes and lost its shape. It wasn't even a lot cheaper—maybe $20 less per unit. But the total cost was worse because I replaced it in under a year.

Think cost per use, not price per item. A $60 fleece that lasts 20 washes is $3 per wash. A $120 fleece that lasts 80 washes is $1.50 per wash. That's the whole argument.

Advice for Scenario 1: Buy Polartec when you know the garment's job. If it needs to handle rain, pair it with a waterproof shell or pick a specific waterproof Polartec membrane. Don't assume “Polartec” means “waterproof.”

Scenario 2: It's Company Swag, Not an Expedition

This is where I have to push back on technical fabric. A branded jacket for a company retreat doesn't need to survive alpine conditions. If you're ordering 30 jackets with a logo, Polartec is often overkill. A light fleece from a regular supplier will probably be fine, at a fraction of the price.

Wait—I'm not saying Polartec is bad. I'm saying it's a waste if the wearer won't use the performance. Procurement teams do this all the time. I did it myself once. In 2021, I ordered premium fleeces for a corporate kickoff, thinking they would last longer and make the team feel valued. They did last. But they also cost three times as much as a simpler fleece that would have done the job in a week of meetings. I should have asked how they'd actually be used before I spent the budget.

One related lesson: when someone requests clothing, listen to the fit spec, not just the fabric. For a summer uniform, I once got a request for “men's denim shorts long.” I tried to spec a more technical-woven fabric instead. The team hated it. They wanted denim, with a longer inseam, because that's what the dress code required. The material didn't need to be high-performance. It needed to be denim.

Color consistency is its own rabbit hole. In the print world, we'd reference a Pantone number. In fabrics, the same Pantone can look different depending on the dye lot and weave. That's why I ask for a physical swatch before I approve any custom order. It's saved me from at least one logo-embroidered disaster.

Advice for Scenario 2: Match the material to the actual use. If the biggest risk is a bright logo or a shrinking wash cycle, don't spend on technical features. Save the budget for items that will face real weather.

Scenario 3: Towels — Terry Cloth Towel vs Microfiber

Now for the “terry cloth towel vs microfiber” question. I've gotten this one from our facilities team, our gym area, and a few clients. The answer depends on who controls the laundry.

Cotton terry cloth towels are my default for shared spaces. They're absorbent, soft, familiar, and can handle hot water and basic detergent. They're heavier, which means higher shipping and laundry costs. But they're forgiving. People don't have to think about them.

Microfiber towels are excellent for specific tasks. They pick up dust and oil, dry fast, and don't leave lint. But they have a catch: fabric softener ruins the fibers. A single dryer sheet can make a brand-new microfiber towel a lot less absorbent. In a shared laundry room, that's almost impossible to prevent. The most frustrating part is that the person who ruined them was just trying to help.

I weighed this in 2022. The upside of microfiber was better cleaning performance. The risk was improper laundering. I kept asking myself: is better performance worth a pile of ruined towels? For our gym, the answer was no. We went with terry cloth. For our cleaning crew, who control their own supplies, microfiber is fine because they know how to wash it.

So which one is “better”? It depends on your care process. If you control drying, microfiber can be a great long-term buy. If you don't, terry cloth is the safer total-cost choice.

Advice for Scenario 3: Choose microfiber only if you can train or control the laundry. Otherwise, cotton terry cloth will cost less in replacement and frustration.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

Here's the decision process I use now, after too many wrong guesses:

  1. Will the item face weather, sweat, or abrasive surfaces? If yes, technical fabric like Polartec is justified. If no, save the money.
  2. Can you control the care? If not, choose fabric that survives neglect. Terry cloth and standard fleece are forgiving. Microfiber and delicate membranes are not.
  3. What's the total cost per use? Add purchase price, shipping, laundering, and expected replacement cost. Divide by how many times the item will be used. That's the real number.
  4. What did the actual user ask for? If they wanted long denim shorts, give them long denim shorts. Don't upgrade to a technical fabric they didn't ask for.

So, is Polartec waterproof? Sometimes. Is Polartec material the best choice? Only if you need what it offers. Is terry cloth better than microfiber? Only if you can't control the wash cycle. Getting comfortable with “it depends” is the most useful thing I've learned in five years of purchasing.
