This comparison comes up constantly, and honestly it's a bit of a category mismatch—but I understand why people ask. Both names appear on premium outdoor gear, so buyers assume they compete. They don't necessarily, because Polartec Alpha is an insulation, while Gore-Tex is a weatherproof membrane. One keeps your core warm; the other keeps rain and wind out.
Here's the practical way to think about it:
- Polartec Alpha traps body heat and lets moisture escape. It's designed for high-output activities—ski touring, cold-weather trail running, mountaineering—where you sweat but still need insulation.
- Gore-Tex blocks liquid water from outside while allowing vapor to move out. It's a shell technology. You often wear it over an insulating layer.
So the real choice is rarely Alpha vs Gore-Tex. It's more like: what layers make sense for your climate and activity?
On a damp 40°F day with wind, you'd want a shell with Gore-Tex or another membrane over a fleece or synthetic insulation layer. On a dry 15°F high-output hike, you might wear Polartec Alpha directly under a windbreaker. Both solve different problems.
One thing I check when evaluating insulation fabric in the lab is the clo value (thermal resistance) per unit weight, along with air permeability. Alpha's open structure gives it a different air permeability profile than a tightly woven Gore-Tex membrane—again, apples to oranges. What should a Polartec fleece jacket cost?

Is a 100% polyester shirt the same as a performance shirt?
No. This is a misconception that frequently gets baked into sourcing requests.
“100% polyester” simply describes the fiber content. It says nothing about the yarn type, knit structure, finish, or moisture wicking treatment. Here's why that matters:
- Yarn type: A filament polyester yarn can feel slick and smooth; a spun polyester yarn feels more cotton-like. Both are 100% polyester.
- Knit structure: A jersey knit, a mesh knit, and a pique knit all behave differently for air flow, stretch, and hand feel.
- Finish: Moisture-wicking is often achieved through a chemical finish or a engineered profile that changes how water spreads across the fiber. Not every polyester shirt has this.
- Weight: A 100 g/m² shirt will not perform like a 150 g/m² shirt, even if the fiber content is identical.
So if you're buying blank shirts for decoration, “100% polyester” is enough. If you're sourcing shirts for athletes or outdoor use, specify the performance parameters: moisture wicking properties, drying time test results, UPF rating if required, and fabric weight.
In quality inspections, I've rejected “polyester” shirts that were technically 100% polyester but failed the client's specified drying time test. The vendor argued that the fiber content was correct. They were right, but that wasn't the full spec. This is exactly the situation where a product developer should clarify expectations before sign-off.
How do you wash fleece-lined tights?
Fleece-lined tights are usually a nylon/spandex outer knit with a brushed or tufted fleece backing (often polyester). The issue is that heat and harsh detergent damage the elastic fibers and the fleece loft.
- Turn the tights inside out. This reduces abrasion on the outer surface and allows the fleece to get more direct water contact for cleaning.
- Use cold water, max 86°F / 30°C. Hot water accelerates elastane breakdown.
- Wash with a gentle or wool-safe detergent. Avoid chlorine bleach and fabric softeners. Fabric softener coats the fibers and reduces moisture management.
- Put the tights in a mesh laundry bag. This protects them from snagging on zippers or Velcro in the same load.
- Air dry. Tumble drying on high heat will eventually delaminate or shrink the fleece backing. If you must machine dry, use the lowest heat setting and pull them out while still slightly damp.
If your tights have a printed tag, washing them inside out also helps preserve print flexibility—prints crack when softened by washing and then stretched during wear.
One caveat: these instructions are general for fleece-lined tights, not a specific brand. Always defer to the garment's care label.
