Polartec Power Stretch Fabric by the Yard: A Scenario-Based Buying Guide

The honest starting point: there is no single 'best' technical fabric

I have been handling technical fabric orders for an outdoor gear company since 2018. I have personally made twelve significant mistakes, totaling roughly $18,500 in wasted budget, and now I maintain our team's sourcing checklist so newer people here do not repeat them. The first lesson on that checklist is this: the right fabric depends on what you are building, where it will live, and whether you are buying raw material or a finished product.

This is not a 'one answer fits all' article. I will walk through four common situations that show up in my inbox and on our production floor:

  • You want a ready-made Arc'teryx Polartec fleece jacket.

Scenario 1: You are buying Polartec Power Stretch fabric by the yard

The usual advice is to buy the thickest version because it will last longer. I used to think that too. Then I watched midweight Power Stretch hold up better than a heavier fleece on high-movement garments, because the elastane content gave it better stretch recovery. Thickness feels durable for about a week. Recovery keeps a garment useful for years. In my opinion, that is where the real value is.

Power Stretch is not a hard shell. It is a stretch fleece for base layers, mid layers, and pieces that need to move under a shell. If someone promises a Polartec fabric that is both stretchy and fully waterproof, ask for the datasheet. I don't have hard data on industry-wide advertising honesty, but based on our orders, a surprising number of listings labeled 'Polartec' do not include a hangtag or a technical datasheet. That should be a red flag.

Before you order yardage, ask for a physical swatch. A photo doesn't tell you stretch recovery or face texture. You also need to check the roll width, not just the price per yard. In 2019, I ordered 90 yards of what I thought was 60-inch Power Stretch; it was actually 52-inch. I came up short, and the reorder cost more than the original order. That same year, I skipped a swatch to save $20 and ended up with $900 of fabric that felt like cardboard. The $20 saving was the most expensive part of the project.

If you are buying a finished piece, the material name is not the whole story. I get why people search for the Arc'teryx name — there is a reason it is respected. But not every Arc'teryx fleece is Polartec, and not every Polartec fleece is the same.

Check the fleece weight and the intended use. A high-loft Polartec Thermal Pro is warm and breathable but bulky. A trim-fitting Polartec Power Stretch or Power Wool midlayer moves better under a shell. The Arc'teryx fit is usually close to the body, which is great for layering and annoying if you wanted a casual hoodie. For a colder climate, size up for a midlayer. For active use, prioritize stretch and breathability over maximum loft.

To be fair, cheaper fleece jackets can also work well. The cost difference usually shows up after twenty washes: seam puckering, pilling, and cuffs that lose their shape. I once saved $80 on a look-alike fleece and replaced it within a year. That was not a saving. That was a rental.

Scenario 3: You need Sunbrella mesh fabric

Sunbrella mesh fabric is a different animal from a knit fleece. It is solution-dyed acrylic, meaning the color is part of the fiber, not printed on the surface. That is why it survives UV better than ordinary polyester mesh. If your project is outdoor furniture, shade, awnings, or marine upholstery, this is where I would put the budget.

But it is not a do-everything fabric. I once used a UV-resistant mesh for a product that needed next-to-skin comfort. Big mistake. The stiffness and hand feel were wrong for clothing. Use the right tool for the right location.

The surprise was how quickly a cheaper 'outdoor' mesh faded in real sunlight. The alternative cost 30% less upfront, but after one summer it looked washed out and brittle. Replacing it cost more than the difference. I don't have exact numbers for every brand, but in our case the cheapest quote was the most expensive choice over two years.

If you need Sunbrella mesh, ask for a sample and put it outside for a week before ordering a large batch. A piece of mesh hanging in a showroom tells you nothing about UV life.

Scenario 4: You are trying to decode material names — what is PET polyester, and why does pink acrylic powder appear in fabric searches?

This is the scenario that confuses a lot of people, because the same words show up in completely different industries.

What is PET polyester? PET is polyethylene terephthalate, the polymer used in most polyester fabrics and in plastic bottles. When it is melted and extruded as fine fibers, it becomes textile polyester. When those fibers come from recycled bottles or pre-consumer waste, it is often called rPET. Polartec has used recycled polyester across many lines. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), a supplier that calls a product 'recycled' should have documentation to back that up. So ask for it. In one project, our supplier provided a certificate from a recycling plant, and that made the decision easy.

Pink acrylic powder is a completely different material from a performance textile. It is an acrylic-based powder used in nail systems and some coatings. The word 'acrylic' creates the collision: Sunbrella mesh is acrylic fiber, while pink acrylic powder is acrylic resin. They share a name but not a function. I have seen someone add pink acrylic powder to a fabric sourcing list, and it led to a completely wrong order. If you are looking for fabric, do not buy a powder. If you are looking for nail products, do not buy fabric.

Yes, that seems obvious once it is written down. But when people search 'pink acrylic powder' and 'polartec' in the same session, it is usually because they are comparing raw materials for a project. The project's success depends on knowing which material class you actually need.

How to tell which scenario you're in

This is the part where most guides say 'use your judgment.' I will be more specific.

  • If you are sewing a garment or ordering material for a prototype, you are in Scenario 1. Start with a swatch and an authorized source.
  • If you are buying a finished jacket and care about brand, pattern, and warranty, you are in Scenario 2. Ignore the 'warmest ever' language and look at insulation weight and fit.
  • If the product will sit in direct sun, rain, or a marine environment, you are in Scenario 3. UV resistance and cleanability matter more than price per yard.
  • If you are staring at a material name and can't tell whether it is a fiber, a resin, or a pigment, you are in Scenario 4. Slow down and identify the polymer family first.

My experience is based on small-batch orders and prototypes, not a massive mill's testing lab. If you are working with a large supplier, your process will be more formal. But I would bet on one thing: the projects that fail are rarely the ones that spent too much on the known material. They are the ones that saved money on the wrong material and paid twice.

There is something satisfying about a fabric order that arrives right, after all the mistakes I have made. The best part is that you do not have to make the same ones. Start with the scenario, then the spec, then the cost. That order has saved our team more money than any discount code ever could.
