- What is the worst condition the garment will actually see? Cold and windy but low activity? Static cold? High output in wet cold? Each points to a different fabric structure.
- What is the layering strategy? If the piece is a midlayer under a shell, breathability is more important than face texture. If it’s a standalone fashion jacket, durability and handfeel are more important than CLO.
- What happens after ten washes? Denim dye transfer, pilling, seam puckering, and loss of loft are all testable. If you haven’t tested, you’re guessing.
Here’s how I’d summarize it: high-output garment → Polartec Alpha Direct or a lightweight Power Dry; casual women’s denim jacket → Power Stretch or Thermal Pro; accessory/bag → low-bulk fleece with good seam compatibility; consumer fleece comparison → judge by knit structure and fiber content, not just brand.
When in doubt, order a handloom. Many reputable mills will send a small sample quickly. The cost—call it $50–100 with shipping—is nothing compared to the alternative. I’ve seen a $350 overnight sample stop a $22,000 production mistake. That’s a trade I’ll make every time.
