Fabric Buyer's FAQ: Polartec, Kevlar, Linen, and Textile Basics

What is Polartec, and is it worth the premium?

Polartec is a brand of performance knit fabrics, best known for inventing modern fleece in the 1980s. Today the brand covers way more than fleece: Alpha (a breathable insulation), Power Stretch, Power Dry, Neoshell, and dozens of other textiles. You see the Polartec label when a garment brand buys from them—companies like Arc'teryx, The North Face, and Mammut use it. The premium price you pay for Polartec over generic fleece often buys consistency: strict quality control, reliable durability, and better thermal performance for the weight. From a total cost of ownership view, the higher per-yard cost can be offset by fewer returns and longer garment life. I've tracked enough orders to know that the real difference isn't in the fabric alone—it's in the number of issues you never have to deal with.

Is Polartec Alpha Direct good for sweaters? What does "Direct" mean?

Alpha Direct is a specific Polartec insulation built to be worn against your skin—no lining, no extra face fabric. The "direct" refers to the exposed knit structure, which is open enough to breathe but still traps air for warmth. That's why it's become a favorite for active sweaters: it dries fast, packs small, and gives you insulation plus moisture management in one layer. Is it worth the extra money? Usually, yes, if you're making a technical garment. The cost is higher because the knit has to be engineered to avoid snagging while maintaining structure. But here's the trap: some people assume a thicker, fluffier Alpha Direct means a warmer sweater. In reality, the grid geometry matters more than the loft. A tight grid can outperform a fluffy one in wind. So don't just compare price per unit—compare how the fabric behaves in the conditions you'll actually use it in.

Can I buy Polartec Power Stretch fabric by the yard?

You can buy Polartec Power Stretch by the yard, but not directly from Polartec—you'll need to go through an authorized distributor. Prices as of mid-2025 range from about $18 to $35 per yard depending on weight, finish, and order volume. That's a big range because Power Stretch comes in different thicknesses (common weights are in the 200-300 gsm range) and can be treated with DWR. The hidden cost that catches most buyers is shipping: rolls of fabric are heavy and bulky. Last year, I compared two distributors for a 100-yard order. Supplier A quoted $22/yard; Supplier B quoted $20/yard. I almost went with B until I calculated the full delivered cost—B's warehouse added a $65 freight charge plus a $15 handling fee. Supplier A's freight was only $25. Total: Supplier B was actually $35 more expensive. Look, I'm not saying the lowest per-yard price never wins. Is Kevlar worth it for women's motorcycle jackets?

Kevlar is a synthetic fiber with extremely high tensile strength, and in motorcycle gear it's used as abrasion resistance—usually woven into textiles or placed as a reinforcement layer. For women's jackets, you'll often see Kevlar in the elbows, shoulders, and back, which are the highest-impact zones in a slide. Is it worth the cost? It depends on how and where you ride. If you're mostly commuting in the city, a jacket with Kevlar only in key areas and CE-approved armor is usually sufficient—you don't need full Kevlar coverage. What matters more is the fit. A jacket that moves around on your body will expose skin even if it's covered in Kevlar. Real talk: I'd choose a $250 jacket with great fit, good placement, and quality stitching over a $500 jacket with "full Kevlar" but a baggy cut. The material is important, but engineering is more important. (Not that I'm dismissing Kevlar—it's excellent when it's in the right place.)

Why are flax linen sheets so expensive?

Flax linen sheets are expensive because the process of turning flax plants into fabric is labor-intensive. Flax fibers are long and delicate to harvest, spin, and weave. Unlike cotton, which is relatively easy to process, linen requires a lot of manual handling. That's why a queen-size set can run $150–$300, while a cotton set is often $50–$100. The cost also reflects that high-quality linen becomes softer and more durable with washing. But here's the catch: not all linen is created equal. "Stonewashed" linen feels soft from the start but may be weaker, and cheap linen can literally thin out after a few washes. I still kick myself for buying a budget set that tore after two years. My replacement cost $120 more up front, but it's now outlasted the cheap one by three years. In the long run, the expensive one was actually cheaper.

What exactly is "textile" and why does it matter?

Textile is the generic term for any material made of fibers that can be woven, knitted, felted, or otherwise bonded together. That includes Polartec (synthetic knit), Kevlar (synthetic woven), linen from flax (natural woven), and also non-woven materials like felt, mesh, and technical composites. Why does this matter in procurement? Because product specs often use "textile" loosely. A "textile shell" on a jacket might actually be a laminate or a stretch mesh—not a traditional fabric. So when you're comparing specs, don't assume "textile" means "fabric." It means an engineered fiber-based material. Knowing the difference helps you ask better questions about abrasion resistance, breathability, and cost. And those questions are what separate a good purchase from a regret.
