For the past seven years, I’ve managed procurement for a 150-person industrial services company. My budget covers a lot of things, but the category that creates the most headaches is technical fabric products. A request will land in my inbox with “need men’s Polartec pants” or “FR Polartec balaclava” or “Kevlar tactical gloves.” It looks straightforward. It isn’t. And I’ve learned that when you buy a name instead of a spec, the result is usually the same: reorders, schedule delays, and a feeling that someone should have asked a few more questions.
The Real Problem: The Name Is Not The Spec
I get why we do it. Who has time to read through fabric datasheets for every purchase? But technical textiles aren’t like standard office supplies. The same brand covers many different engineered products, so the name alone doesn’t tell the supplier what you actually need.
Men’s Polartec Pants: Same Brand, Different Fabrics
Polartec isn’t one fabric. It’s a brand with multiple knit structures and finishes—Power Stretch, Thermal Pro, Power Grid, Power Wool, and others. A pair of men’s Polartec pants made from a light grid fabric feels completely different from one made from a heavier Alpine fleece. Both can honestly be called “Polartec pants.” Neither is automatically better. They’re built for different temperatures, activity levels, and layering systems.
If the request only says “Polartec,” you leave the important choices to the vendor. That’s how you end up with workers sweating in a hard-shell layer or freezing in a midlayer that was never designed for that job.
FR Polartec Balaclava: The Standard Is the Spec
When someone asks for an “FR Polartec balaclava,” the brand might be specified, but the protection is not. Flame-resistant and arc-rated are related, but not identical. The balaclava’s level of protection depends on the standard it was tested to, not on the fiber brand.
For electrical work, NFPA 70E requires arc-rated head-area protection when there’s an arc flash hazard. A balaclava sold as “FR” could pass one test and fail another. Ask for the test report and the arc rating. If the supplier can’t produce it, that’s a red flag.
Kevlar Tactical Gloves: Material Is Not a Rating
Kevlar is a brand name for an aramid fiber. It’s very strong. But a glove’s cut resistance depends on the whole construction—fiber type, yarn weight, knit density, coating, and finish. A thin Kevlar tactical glove can score lower on a cut test than a glove made from a different material with better engineering.
That’s why the ANSI/ISEA cut rating matters more than the word “Kevlar.” According to ANSI/ISEA 105, cut-resistant gloves are rated from A1 to A9 based on ASTM F2992 testing. The rating replaces the guesswork. If your supplier can’t tell you the cut level, they’re selling you a material, not a glove.
Round Sling Polyester: Read the Tag, Not the Name
A round sling polyester looks like a simple soft tube. But its working load limit is set by the load-bearing yarns in the core and the way the cover is sewn. The tag on the sling should show the rated capacity, the manufacturer, and the inspection requirements. ASME B30.9 and OSHA’s sling standard at 29 CFR 1910.184 cover these slings for good reason. A sling without a legible tag is a liability.
In 2023, a third-party inspector flagged a shipment of polyester round slings because the load certificates didn’t match the tagging. The slings looked perfect. The paperwork was wrong. It stopped a job for two days. The cheap price didn’t feel so cheap after that.
What Is Performance Fabric Sofa?
Even the furniture world has the same problem. “Performance fabric” sounds like a spec, but it isn’t one. It’s a marketing category. So when someone asks “what is performance fabric sofa?” the answer should come with test data, not just a catchy description. A performance fabric sofa could mean stain-resistant, water-repellent, high-abrasion, or simply “treated with a finish.”
The useful questions are: What abrasion test was used? How many cycles did it pass? Look for Wyzenbeek or Martindale results. And ask about the warranty. Without that data, you’re comparing adjectives, not products.
What This Actually Costs
These naming gaps have a price. I say that from experience.
In 2022, we bought a batch of Kevlar tactical gloves because “Kevlar” was in the name. They failed during field handling within three weeks. We reordered a different style, paid express freight, and lost a day of training. The first order’s “savings” disappeared.
Then there’s safety risk. In 2021, I almost wrote off an FR requirement as paperwork. The supplier had a balaclava that looked and felt right. But the test report didn’t match the requested standard. If we’d accepted it, someone on the crew could have been exposed to an arc flash without the right protection. That’s not a reorder cost. That’s a life-safety problem.
The quietest cost, though, is time uncertainty. It took me about six years of ordering to understand that a guaranteed date is worth real money. In March 2024, we paid 12% more for a supplier to commit to a firm delivery date on 200 units of Polartec layers. The lower bidder said the order would “probably” arrive in time. Probably isn’t a date. When your crew is scheduled and the job has a hard stop, certainty is the product.
The surprise wasn’t the price difference. It was how much the “expensive” supplier’s documentation saved us in the end.
A Simpler Way
You don’t need to become a textile engineer. You need to shift the conversation from product names to performance requirements.
- Name the standard before you name the product. FR? Say which one. Cut protection? Say the ANSI level. Lifting? Say you need ASME B30.9 documentation. Upholstery? Ask for abrasion test data.
- Ask for the datasheet and test report. If the supplier can’t provide them, that’s a warning sign.
- Compare total cost, not unit price. Include freight, documentation, delivery risk, and the cost of reordering if the first batch fails.
- Treat guaranteed delivery as a real feature. When the deadline matters, pay for the certainty.
To be fair, a good supplier can help fill in the blanks. The conversation works better when you say, “I need a cold-weather layer for outdoor workers in Minnesota” or “I need a cut-resistant glove for handling sheet metal” rather than “I want Polartec pants” or “I want Kevlar gloves.”
Standards change over time, so verify the current version before you write the purchase order. But the principle stays the same: Polartec, Kevlar, polyester, and “performance” are starting points, not specs. The cheap quote is only cheap after you know what it includes. The expensive quote is only expensive before you calculate what it costs to be wrong.
